Compromise for a Healthy Football Season; You’ll Have a Healthy Sex Life

For couples where the husband gets engrossed in football this time of year, Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil has tips to help ensure that sports doesn’t become a power struggle. Since 49 percent of men enjoy watching football more than any sport (according to a Gallup poll: http://www.gallup.com/poll/10438/football-reigns-americas-favorite-sport.aspx) and only 29 percent of women do, conflict can easily crop up this time of year. Dr. Bonnie suggests turning the football playoffs into a fun event for the couple instead.

“Try to make it an experience of novelty and mystery for both people, which raises the endorphin level” Dr. Bonnie advises, “schedule the time to watch the games so that the wife or the less interested party isn’t surprised when there’s another game on television.”

If it’s not practical – or enjoyable! – for both people to watch the games, make sure that the experience is still mutually beneficial. Use half-time as a time to snuggle with your partner, or wives can make their husbands their favorite snacks – especially since a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

If guys do watch the playoffs on their own, they should make sure to set a separate time during the week to create a special experience for their wife. Suggests Dr. Bonnie: “Take her out to dinner, or cook her favorite meal.” With this type of mentality it’s easier to negotiate on things that are important to you, rather than becoming locked in a power struggle.

When both people in a relationship are happy doing the things they enjoy – instead of feeling guilty or brow-beaten – each person is more fulfilled and this leads to a healthier sex life. Dr. Bonnie encourages couples to use the playoffs as an event to get closer to each other, and create a stronger relational bond – whether or not the couple watches the games together, or works out another arrangement.
